Horse Skull and Jack's Hole Cave Preserve Management Plan

Preserve Description | Plot Map | Make a Donation

Adopted October 11, 1997
Revised October 10, 1998

The following plan was adopted by the Board of Directors to define the management of the Conservancy's Horse Skull Cave property. The intent of this plan is to protect the property and to preserve the good relationship that the SCCI has established with the surrounding landowners. The Board recognizes that many cavers and organizations throughout the country have supported the acquisition of the property, and wishes to make access as open as possible. Please observe the rules and encourage others to do the same so that this unique and beautiful natural site may be enjoyed by all.

Contact SCCi Horse Skull/Jack's Hole Property Manager at horseskull@scci.org if you have questions or to request special arrangements.

  1. While membership is not required for access to the preserve, the Conservancy strongly recommends that visitors be members of the SCCi. Membership in the National Speleological Society  is also encouraged.

  2. Permission is not required to visit the preserve.

  3. Use only the designated parking area and trail.  We do not own the parking area; remember you are a guest of our neighbor when you park there.

  4. To minimize impact, the Conservancy prefers that groups visiting the cave be small. Please try to keep the number of people in your group to twelve (12) or fewer. Large groups have greater impact on the cave environment.

  5. Use of the property for any type of commercial activity, including caving or other recreational activities, is not allowed.

  6. Hunting is not allowed except by direct written permission of the SCCI Board. The Board has given permission only to the neighboring landowners and our designated local caretaker. No other hunters are allowed.

  7. To avoid parking and over-use problems during caving conventions and special events, we ask that access to the property be limited during those events to trips organized through the SCCI.

  8. Please keep noise to a minimum, and be discreet while changing clothes.

  9. Modifications to the cave or property, including the placing of bolts or other artificial anchors is prohibited without the express written consent of the SCCI Board.

  10. The property will be maintained in its natural state and will not be developed, improved, or exploited in any way, except as necessary to maintain the boundaries and access trails and to manage its usage as a natural area.

Commercial Use Statement
The Board of the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. (SCCi) reaffirms its standing policy that bans the commercial use of our properties, and specifically, prohibits any activity where a charge of any type is made. Should you have any questions, contact the SCCi Chair at chair@scci.org .
