SCCi Board Meeting Highlights
Chattanooga, Tennessee
January 27, 2001
At the SCCi's quarterly board meeting January 27 in Chattanooga, TN, the board voted to hold another open house at Frick's Cave. The date is set for March 3, from 9:00 until 5:00. Unlike last year, this will be a one-day only event. Cave visitation is possible because the federally protected endangered grey bats are not currently in residence.
At Myrna Attaway's request, the board also agreed to co-sponsor the Anderson Cave Cleanup in their ongoing effort to acquire stewardship of this cave. Times and dates will be announced by the Birmingham.
To further protect Hardins Cave, Bill Overton, one of the property managers for the Nashville Grotto, brought the SCCi a new lease to sign granting the Conservancy the second entrance to the cave. This entrance will be gated by the Nashville property management team.
Dave Cowan, the property manager for Lobelia Saltpeter Cave, in West Virginia, asked the SCCi to take steps to protect the saltpeter mining artifacts in the cave, which are beginning to show some signs of deterioration. Cowan was authorized to pursue this work with appropriate experts and to report back.
The decision was made to hold the annual member's meeting at Frick's Cave on June 30. The meeting will be followed by a cookout. Prior to the meeting the quarterly business meeting will take place in LaFayette.
Connie Hillebrand reported that the Schreiber Estate Auction earned $3,876. In December, the SCCi provided support to Georgia Public Television for a program on caves and caving in Georgia.
All current officers of the Conservancy were re-elected to another term. Treasurer is Buddy Lane, Secretary is Kenneth Huffines, and the Chair is Diane Cousineau.
