Make a Donation
The Lobelia Saltpeter Cave Preserve is located in Pocahontas County, WV. Lobelica Saltpeter Cave is a small but historically significant cave containing saltpeter works. The remains of a saltpeter water collection trough and wooden hand tools
are the most significant artifacts found in the cave.
NOTICE: To help prevent the spread of the deadly White Nose Syndrome (WNS) affecting bat populations, Lobelia Saltpeter Cave is temporarily closed. Please read this announcement for details. A roundtable discussion about WNS and the SCCi's response will be held May 16 at the annual meeting. You are invited to provide your input. .
Since Lobelia Saltpeter Cave is so cold and the entrance "sucks" in the winter,
pretty spectacular ice formations form in the entrance room during cold
weather. There are very few speleothems of note in any of the easily
accessible sections of the cave.
